  • City Directories have been microfilmed by the LDS. Starting in 1853 until the mid 1870s, the identifiable Jewish names in the directory were: Gumberts, Hayes (Haas), Heimann, Kahn, Kronenberger, Loewenberg, Scholem and Weil. LDS Film Library for Evansville

  • Evansville was along the Ohio River, conveniently situated between Cincinnati and St. Louis, Memphis, and other cities down the Mississippi. There was a lot of travel along that route among the German Jewish immigrants, and a lot of interaction among the residents of those cities. A number of the families who settled in Evansville, nearby Posey County, and across the river in Kentucky, came from the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in the far western part of Germany. The towns of Hoppstaedten, Gonnesweiler, Soetern, and Bosen were well-represented in Evansville.
