*Cemetery established in 1878, following the death and burial in December, 1877 of Clara, daughter of Isaac and Bertha (Zwang) Senders. The Senders donated the land for the cemetery, at the time named the Albany Hebrew Cemetery. Current name is Waverly Jewish Cemetery. Burials up to about 5 years ago are in the Jewishgen database.

The Senders clan and relations were from Bosen and Soetern, Principality of Birkenfeld, a small unconnected piece of the Duchy of Oldenburg in the Rhineland area of Germany.

*A Jewish community was officially formed 18 April, 1878 at a meeting at Senders and Sternbergs Store, the First Hebrew Congregation of Albany Oregon and Vicinity. Officers were:

Leon Senders, President

Julius Gradwohl, Vice President

Julius Joseph, Secretary

Ed Baum, Treasurer

Moses Sternberg of Albany, Trustee

S. Cohn of Albany, Trustee

Maurice Jacobs of Corvallis, Trustee

Samson H. Friendly of Eugene, Trustee

Samuel May of Harrisburg, Trustee

*Albany Lodge No. 315 of B'nai B'rith was chartered 1 May, 1879, with 23 members. Julius Joseph was the first President.

*One of the few Jewish families to come overland via the Oregon Trail (vs via ship and Panama to San Francisco) were brothers Jacob and Louis Fleischner, who arrived in Albany in 1853, moving on to Portland in 1862. Jacob Fleischner was one of the very few, if not the only Jewish recipient of a Donation Land Claim in the Oregon Territory.
