USA / Pennsylvania / Franklin / Chambersburg
The Old Jewish Cemetery of CHAMBERSBURG, PA was
started in 1840 and is believed to be the earliest
Jewish burial place west of the Susquehanna. There are
about 70 headstones extant today, many from the 1840's
through 1870's, and many with Hebrew epitaphs only.
Fortunately enough, no more than six or seven are
illegible, and almost all people can be identified.
There is a website with in-depth information at:
http://www.jewishchambersburg.com
People interred in this cemetery were from
Chambersburg, Fayetteville, Hagerstown, Clear Spring,
Bendersville, York, Carlisle, Mechanicsburg,
Harrisburg, and other places in the area of south
central Pennsylvania and adjoining counties of Maryland.
Text is from a EA SIG group posting.
